Colonoscopy in Germany

Virtual colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is a technique whose implementation has made a real breakthrough in gastroenterological practice and medicine in general. Endoscopic examination of the intestine in German clinics is carried out using modern equipment. Based on the data obtained during colonoscopy, the doctor develops an individual treatment strategy for the diagnosed pathological process.

How the colonoscopy procedure is performed

Several colonoscopy methods are used in modern German clinics. For each patient, their own method is selected based on individual characteristics. The most commonly used are:

  • Standard colonoscopy. The technique of endoscopic examination is based on the use of special colonoscopes equipped with a camera.
  • Virtual colonoscopy. Used for therapeutic purposes after the diagnosis has been established. The technique does not cause discomfort to patients.
  • Capsule colonoscopy. A non-invasive modern method of diagnosing all parts of the intestinal tract. To perform the examination, the patient must swallow a special capsule equipped with a camera. When passing through all parts of the intestine, the device records the image obtained. Doctors have the opportunity to assess the condition of the mucous membranes of not only the large intestine, but also the small intestine.

 Colonoscopy requires special preparation. The intestine must be as free as possible from food residues for better visualization. Therefore, before the examination, certain foods should be avoided, and the prescribed laxatives should be taken according to a special regimen.  The doctor conducts a detailed consultation before prescribing the examination. Colonoscopy in Germany does not take much time. The patient is given anesthesia and during the entire colonoscopy period, the person does not feel discomfort. The procedure is as follows:

  1. After changing into disposable clothing (provided at the clinic), the patient should lie on the couch, positioned on the left side and bend the knees, pulling them to the chest.
  2. Next, a drug is administered intravenously to put the person under anesthesia.
  3. A qualified endoscopist applies a special gel to the tip of the colonoscope to ensure maximum sliding. This will help prevent damage to the tissues of the anal opening and the walls of the intestine.
  4. The specialist inserts the colonoscope tube into the anal opening and performs an examination of the intestinal tissues.

Upon completion of the procedure, the doctor removes the colonoscope from the patient. The patient needs time to recover from anesthesia. After colonoscopy in German clinics, the patient is given an individual room to recover.

Advantages of colonoscopic examination in Germany

German clinics hold leading positions worldwide in the field of pathology diagnosis. When contacting a German clinic for colonoscopy, patients do not need to worry about the qualifications of specialists. Doctors can diagnose not only early stages of cancer, but also other pathologies of the intestinal tract.

The advantage of colonoscopic examination in Germany is modern equipment and highly qualified doctors. Specialists perform endoscopic examination while the patient is in medicated sleep. This means that the procedure will be as painless and fast as possible for the patient.

When colonoscopy procedure is necessary

Endoscopic examination is prescribed when the doctor suspects large intestine pathologies. The main symptoms requiring the selected type of colonoscopy to establish an accurate diagnosis:

  • problems with defecation frequency;
  • change in the nature of feces;
  • presence of impurities in feces - blood, mucus, pus (may indicate polyps);
  • abdominal pain that persists or intensifies at night;
  • sudden weight loss;
  • persistent low-grade fever - subfebrile body temperature readings (37 - 37.5).

The doctor may prescribe endoscopic examination to confirm a preliminary diagnosis - Crohn's disease, benign or malignant neoplasms in the large or small intestine.

Moreover, colonoscopy is considered a mandatory procedure prescribed for preventive purposes for timely diagnosis of neoplasms in people at risk. The procedure is performed once every 4-5 years for people over 50 years old.

Contraindications to the procedure

Colonoscopy, even performed under anesthesia with minimal risks of damage, is considered a complex endoscopic intervention. Therefore, it should be performed only as indicated by the attending physician. Contraindications include:

  • infectious lesions of the intestine and other organs in the acute stage;
  • heart or lung failure in the stage of decompensation;
  • specialist's suspicion of peritonitis development in the patient;
  • general severe condition of the patient;
  • severe forms of ischemic colitis.

The above contraindications are relative. After stabilization of the patient's general condition, the doctor decides whether to perform or reject the endoscopic examination.

Features of colonoscopy

For maximum comfort during rectal colonoscopy in German clinics, the patient is given anesthesia.

The procedure is performed only with written permission from the patient. Doctors and all medical staff have special training and high qualifications.

Manipulations are performed in a room specially equipped for endoscopic examination.

The feature of colonoscopy in Germany is almost complete absence of discomfort and short recovery time. Hospitalization is not required, and the patient can eat and drink water after the examination. Specialists make a diagnosis in a short time based on the results of the procedure and inform the patient.
