Treatment of Uterine and Ovarian Cancer in Germany

photo of uterine and cervical cancer

Cancer diseases of the female reproductive system are a whole group of malignant neoplasms that affect the uterus, cervix and ovaries. Tumors of the external genitalia occur less frequently and have a metastatic nature – they develop as a result of the transfer of mutated cells from the primary cancer focus. Treatment of uterine cancer in Germany gives encouraging results thanks to high medical standards and the introduction of innovative treatment methods.

Symptoms of Gynecological Oncology

Each type of neoplasm is characterized by specific symptoms that a woman should pay attention to in order to diagnose the problem in time and begin treatment.

Signs of cervical cancer:

  • bloody discharge from the genital tract (both spontaneous and after intimate contact);
  • mucous discharge – transparent or yellowish;
  • heavy and painful periods;
  • bleeding during menopause;
  • pain during sexual intercourse;
  • pain in the lower abdomen and in the vaginal area.

The main symptom of uterine body cancer is vaginal bleeding, especially that which occurs during menopause. It may be accompanied by purulent, mucous, or watery discharge. Pain is not characteristic of this oncopathology – pain syndrome occurs with extensive spread of the tumor process and the appearance of metastases.

With malignant neoplasms in the ovaries, patients complain of:

  • bloating;
  • digestive disorders (constipation, diarrhea, heartburn);
  • menstrual cycle disorders;
  • frequent urination;
  • pain in the abdomen, lower back or pelvis.

Oncological diseases of the female reproductive system are accompanied by a general deterioration of the condition. Weight loss, chronic fatigue, pale skin, hair loss, brittle nails, weakness and loss of appetite are observed.

Diagnostic Approach

diagnostics

Diagnosis of gynecological cancer in Germany is a complex of examinations that are carried out in the shortest possible time so as not to waste precious time. The most informative diagnostic methods:

  • Cytological examination of smears. Biomaterial is extracted from the urethra, cervix and vagina, allowing assessment of the condition of the mucous membrane, the presence or absence of pathological processes (tumor, inflammation).
  • Transvaginal ultrasound. The ultrasound method helps to visualize in detail the anatomy of the pelvic organs, the location and structure of the uterus, the size of the ovaries and other indicators for accurate diagnosis.
  • Colposcopy and hysteroscopy. Endoscopic techniques that allow examination of the walls of the vagina, uterus and cervix, the openings of the fallopian tubes, and the condition of the endometrium.
  • MRI of the pelvis. Tomographic scanning is aimed at layer-by-layer study of the tissues of internal organs, detection of the smallest neoplasms and hypothetical determination of their nature.
  • PET-CT. In gynecology, the technique is used to study the structure and functional characteristics of tissues, to detect and determine the degree of development of oncology.
  • Tumor marker analysis. Determining the amount of specific proteins in the blood makes it possible to suspect cancer at an early stage, control metastases and the effectiveness of therapy.

For better visualization of lymph nodes, computed tomography is prescribed. If a tumor is detected, diagnostic curettage and tissue biopsy are indicated.

Cancer Treatment in Gynecology

German oncogynecologists practice both traditional and innovative therapeutic methods. The tactics of cervical cancer treatment in Germany are developed taking into account the woman's age, the stage of the malignant process, the presence of concomitant diseases and the burden of medical history.

Surgical Intervention

It involves the radical removal of the internal organ affected by the malignant neoplasm. During the operation, not only the tumor is removed, but also the surrounding tissues together with the regional lymph nodes. This minimizes the risk of recurrence and the appearance of metastases. The surgical treatment method is especially effective in the early stages of the disease.

Thanks to the use of laparoscopic techniques, it is possible to remove the neoplasm through mini-incisions. After such an operation, barely visible scars remain, and the recovery period is reduced many times.

Organ-preserving tactics are indicated for non-invasive cervical cancer at the initial stage in women of childbearing age. High or cone amputation of the cervix is a sparing operation, after which the reproductive function is preserved.

Chemotherapy

Treatment with cytostatic drugs can be used as an independent method or in combination with surgery and radiation. The goal of chemotherapy is to suppress tumor growth, destroy its structure and prevent the spread of metastases.

In Germany, a personalized approach is used in the selection of drugs. The latest generation cytostatics are selected taking into account the histological structure of the cancer and its localization, the totality of diagnoses, the weight and age of the woman. This approach makes it possible to successfully treat any oncology and minimizes unwanted side effects.

Radiotherapy

The use of ionizing radiation is indicated when malignant gynecological neoplasms of various morphological structures and localizations are detected. With competent medical tactics, even advanced cases of oncology are amenable to effective treatment – the tumor decreases in size, which is a prerequisite for successful removal by the radical method. A full course of chemotherapy suppresses the growth of new pathological cells, serves as good prevention of complications and the appearance of new cancer foci.

To combat oncological diseases in Germany, gentle targeted radiation therapy methods are used:

  • 3D-CRT;
  • IMRT;

During the sessions, the rays are directed exactly to the affected area without load on the neighboring healthy tissues.

Innovative Methods

The group of improved methods for the treatment of uterine and ovarian cancer includes:

  • Stereotactic radiosurgery – high-precision robotic technique suppresses the growth of not only the primary neoplasm, but also distant metastases.
  • Immunotherapy – specially developed drugs are able to recognize and destroy mutated cells.
  • Photodynamic therapy – elimination of the tumor using light with a certain wavelength and simultaneous administration of photosensitizing drugs.

Cost of Cancer Treatment in Germany

An individual consultation will help determine the price for the treatment of oncological diseases of the female reproductive system. The cost of a full course of therapy will depend on several factors:

  • the chosen clinic;
  • the exact diagnosis, type and stage of development of the neoplasm;
  • the duration of hospital stay;
  • the duration and specifics of rehabilitation.
