Osteoporosis Treatment in Germany

The fear that the slightest careless movement or pressure can cause a fracture is familiar to people suffering from osteoporosis. According to the World Health Organization, a quarter of all women over 50 years old suffer from this pathology. Bone mass loss does not manifest itself until a certain point. Often the first symptom of pathology is a change in the shape of the spine, a fracture, after which many people consider undergoing treatment in Germany.

What Is Osteoporosis

affected bone photo

Osteoporosis  —  is a metabolic pathology in which bones become less dense and fragile. The disease develops gradually.

The structure of bones changes. Bone tissue is constantly renewed  —  old bone substance is destroyed, replaced by new. This process is controlled by the hormonal system, and vitamins and minerals also participate in bone tissue renewal.

In young people, renewal processes predominate, but with age they slow down. When the balance shifts towards destruction, bone tissue loses density, osteoporosis occurs.

Doctors in Germany and other countries distinguish 2 types of osteoporosis:

  1. Occurs in women during menopause due to hormonal imbalance. Vertebrae are most vulnerable to this form of the disease —  doctors most often register their fractures;
  2. A scourge of elderly people (over 70 years old). With this form of the disease, fractures of the vertebrae, femoral neck, forearm, ribs often occur.

Hormonal changes and advanced age  —  are not the only risk factors for osteoporosis. They also include:

  • late onset of menstruation (menarche);
  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • prolonged immobilization;
  • insufficient body weight;
  • diet low in calcium or consumption of large amounts of phosphorus-containing products (they are present in high doses in sweet carbonated drinks, fast food products);
  • excessive coffee consumption;
  • alcohol abuse;
  • smoking.

There are signs by which osteoporosis can be suspected even before fractures occur. Special attention should be paid to posture  —  if a previously slender person with good posture develops a stoop, a hump, it is necessary to urgently consult a clinic and be examined. Other warning signs may include:

  • feeling of aching in the bones, twisting of joints;
  • cramps in the legs, arms, disturbing at night and during the day;
  • nail plate delamination;
  • chest pain;
  • discomfort, tension and soreness between the shoulder blades;
  • pain in the lower back, neck;
  • muscle weakness;
  • height decrease;
  • spinal curvature;
  • frequent dislocations, subluxations.

If osteoporosis is suspected, it is necessary to consult a clinic as soon as possible, undergo diagnostics and start treatment. When the disease is already advanced, it is necessary to contact specialists who use the most progressive and effective therapy methods. Such specialists work in German clinics.

Diagnostics

diagnostic procedure

German clinics are equipped with the latest equipment that allows assessing the state of the skeleton, detecting the disease even before the first visible symptoms appear and prescribing effective treatment.

In Germany, doctors follow a certain algorithm when examining patients with osteoporosis or suspected osteoporosis:

  • Diagnostics begins with laboratory tests. They are prescribed to determine the level of hormones, phosphorus, calcium in the blood. Their concentration gives an idea of the state of the skeleton, the presence of destructive changes in it and the stage of the disease.
  • Bone density determination (absorptiometry) is performed using X-ray equipment. This examination method is similar to conventional radiography, but uses low-intensity radiation.
  • Magnetic resonance and computed tomography allows identifying the weakest points of the skeleton and recreates its image in three-dimensional projection.

Tomographic diagnostics is the most accurate way to assess the state of the entire human bone system and prescribe adequate treatment.

Osteoporosis Treatment Methods in German Clinics

In medical centers in Germany, comprehensive treatment of the disease is carried out. After a thorough examination, doctors develop an individual therapy regimen. The patient is recommended:

  • A special diet that meets age norms and contains a sufficient amount of microelements and vitamins. The dietary menu is designed so that the necessary components (calcium, potassium, zinc, magnesium) are supplied in combination with others so that there is no food conflict and the most important substances are well absorbed. A properly composed diet allows you to quickly replenish the deficiency of necessary vitamins and microelements.
  • Treatment of diseases that could have provoked the development of osteoporosis is prescribed. For example, if gastrointestinal dysfunction is detected, treatment for it is prescribed. After a course of therapy, the absorption of useful substances into the blood improves.
  • Therapy in German clinics involves optimization of the motor regimen. Patients with bone system pathology are prohibited from increased physical activity, so a special set of exercises for them is compiled by experienced physical therapy instructors and rehabilitation doctors.

While in the clinic or during outpatient treatment, patients can attend yoga, swimming, physical therapy classes  —  all this is included in the treatment price. Moderate physical activity strengthens the muscular corset, relieves compression from the spine, improves coordination of movements and reduces the risk of fractures.

Drug therapy, in addition to taking vitamin and mineral preparations, involves treatment with hormonal agents. They reduce the intensity of the bone tissue degradation process, strengthen the skeleton. If necessary, thyroid hormones and fluorine-containing preparations are prescribed. For women during menopause, doctors in Germany prescribe synthetic drugs to maintain hormonal balance or phytoestrogens.

In osteoporosis, bone tissue destruction occurs. The technology of micro-invasive  biological regenerative autogenous reconstruction (MIBRAR®) allows coping with this problem.

This unique technology, created by Professor Arsen Babayan, involves the introduction of a regenerative concentrate into the problem area consisting of:

  • autologous plasma;
  • growth factors;
  • regenerative substances.
healed joint

It is obtained from the patient's own blood (venous) and adipose tissue and injected through a small puncture using specially developed micro-dimensional endoscopic equipment. The process of delivering the regenerative concentrate is carried out under video control.

The use of MIBRAR® technology in spinal operations allows improving the nutrition of individual vertebrae, including through facet joints.

MIBRAR® according to individual indications can also be used for other problems of the musculoskeletal system, as well as applied simultaneously on several structures.

For patients who have already had a fracture due to weakened bones, German doctors perform correction of the musculoskeletal system. Operations are performed using modern high-precision equipment. Patients undergo endoprosthetics (replacement of destroyed joints), installation of reinforcing plates.

Treatment Cost in German Clinics

The treatment price is determined by the severity of the patient's condition and the range of necessary procedures. The price is also affected by the length of stay in the clinic.

Prices for basic procedures:
  • hip joint endoprosthetics —  12-13 thousand euros;
  • doctor's fee for surgery —  from 3500 euros;
  • anesthesia —  1100 euros;
  • rehabilitation —  from 200 to 400 euros per day.
All treatment prices in Germany.

 The cost of treatment also depends on the level of the clinic and its location. A course of treatment in a clinic located in a big city is always higher than in a small one. At the same time, there is no difference in the quality of care provided, the level of knowledge, skills of doctors and staff.
